Im not sure I agree with this simplification regarding the Gestapo (Gehiemstaatspolizie) I don't think they went off and tended their alotments or took up fishing at wars end - maybe some did - but a lot of these people (if you can call them that) were highly skilled opperatives and loved the work.
Even in WW2 the allies and the Germans had something in common - a fear of the Bolshevics - and the nazi intelligence services and German army intelligence such as the Abwehr - had put together huge spy networks and and had amassed an enormouse amount of files and data - which I suspect was all taken over, lock-stock-and barrle by the CIA.
Dont forget the CIA where formaly the SOE Special Ops executive....
I think they just took over although some former Gestapo officers might simply have joined the Stasi in eastern Germany when the wall went up.
End of war was very interesting, esp when you realise that at least 2 German U-Boats where still at sea in AUGUST 1945!

∙ 14y agoAccording to the Wikipedia article on the Gestapo it was set up by Goering on 26 April 1933 from a merger of two existing organizations. In 1934 Goering had to hand over control to Himmler and it was gradually put under the overall jurisdiction of the SS.
