The Nile River overflowed its banks because of the Melting snow and heavy summer rain in the Ethiopian Mountains. The water from the mountains flow downhill into the Nile causing it to overflow.
The Nile flooded during the months when it rained, thus allowing the Egyptians to predict it. The Egyptians were grateful for the Nile flooding and attributed it to the kindness of their gods. However, when there was a drought, and the Nile did not flood the Egyptians assumed that their gods were punshing them.
