The short war usually called the Gulf War, which involved a US-led coalition forcing Iraqi forces out of Kuwait, took place between August 1990 and February 1991. The war was divided into two main phases:

  • Operation Desert Shield - Aug 1990 to Jan 1991: After Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait at the beginning of August 1990, the coalition set up a defensive force to prevent Iraq from invading Saudi Arabia.
  • Operation Desert Storm - Jan 1991 to Feb 1991: the coalition invaded Kuwait and southern Iraq, quickly and decisively defeating the Iraqi forces.

What was the significant of the gulf War?

The Gulf War was the first major conflict after the Cold War, in the era of what President Bush called the New World Order. Indeed, the demise of the Soviet Union created the conditions for the Gulf War to take place. Earlier there were upsets in Panama, Haiti, and the Philippines as Free World dictators were overthrown, but these were minor engagements compared to the Gulf War. Without the Soviet Union to police that area of the world, the Western countries, primarily the US and Great Britain, have taken a greater presence there, along with a greater responsibility.
