Officially, Tudor dynasty began when Henry VII became king of England in 1485. (He reigned till his death in 1509). The roots of Tudors go back to 13th century, but the dynastic destiny of the family was established by Owen Tudor (about 1400-1461), a Welshman adventurer who served kings Henry V and Henry VI and fought for Lancasters during the Wars of Roses; he was beheaded after the victory of the house of York in Mortimer Cross (1461). Owen had married the widow of Henry V Katherine of Valois of Lancaster family and their eldest kind, Edmond (about 1430-1456), was promoted to count of Richmond from Henry VI and married Margaret Beaufort, Lady Margaret, who as great grandson of John of Gent, Duke of Lancaster and son of Edward III, had claims to the throne as Lancaster. His only son, Henry Tudor was born after the death of Edmond. In 1485 Henry leaded a raid against king Richard III (of the house of York) and won him in Bosworth Field. As Henry VII he raised claims on the throne, by heritage right, but also by virtue of divine judgment come up at the battle, and confirmed his claim by marrying Elisabeth daughter of Edward IV and heiress of the House of York. The rose of Tudors symbolized the union, figuring out the red rose of Lancaster over the white rose of York.
