Well it depends on which one your looking for, see the first time Puritans came to the New World to seek land, prosperity, and free from their homeland, and they came here and just disappeared and to this day no one knows what happened, and then you have another time where more Puritans came over and that's when the New World was starting to be colonized in Massachusetts.

The Vikings sailed from Greenland around 1000 AD. The colony did not last long.

It wasn't until 1513 when de Leon explored the coasts of Florida. Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and discovered the Pacific Ocean. From 1539-1542 Coronado discovered the Grand Canyon and went through the Southwest looking for gold and the Seven Cities of Cibola. About this same time de Soto explored southeastern North America from Florida to the Mississippi River. France also was exploring in 1534 Cartier explored the St. Lawrence River. In 1562 Ribault explored the St. Johns River and in 1608 Champlain explored the areas north. The Dutch in 1609 had Henry Hudson and laid claim to the Hudson River valley.

Usually 1492 is given as the year that Europeans- represented by Christopher Columbus- arrived in North America. This is because that was when Europe became fully aware of the existence of the continent, and had the technology and resources to exploit it.

However, it is generally accepted that Europeans did visit North America prior to that time. Around the 1000-1100's, Vikings appear to have settled in parts of Canada.

It is also possible that people were able to visit North America before then. There are claims out there that Phoenicians (people related to the ancient Jews who were originally from the Middle East but later also lived in North Africa and Spain), Chinese and Africans may have visited or settled in North America.

Leif Eriksson was a Viking who settled briefly in Canada from Greenland. He called the land Vinland. This happened in the year 1000 AD. In 1963, ruins of an 11th-century Viking settlement were discovered at L’Anse-aux-Meadows in northern Newfoundland.
