An American team found the world's biggest meteor crater almost two kilometres deepunder the Wilkes Land region of Antarctica, directly south of Australia. They say the 500-kilometre-wide crater wascaused by a meteor almost 50 kilometres wide, the size of Sydney. The meteor struck 250 million years ago and must have been the biggest explosion ever seen on the planet, far bigger than the 10-kilometre-wide meteor which hit east of Mexico 65 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs. The massive explosion from the impact probably created the continent of Australia, forcing it to break away from the existing land mass. Ohio State University scientists who found the crater said the massive Antarctic crater could explain the global extinction in the Permian-Triassic period when all animal life on Earth died out, clearing the way for the dinosaurs.

I assume you mean Barringer Crater in Arizona. 50.000 years.

well I'm assuming they meant the crater that killed the dinosaurs. about 65 millions years ago. :P

About 10 minutes after the Earth itself formed. The Earth had _always_ been bombarded by stray space rocks, because they were part of the formation of the solar system. IN fact, the Earth itself probably formed as the various space rocks banged together and clumped up under the force of their own gravity.

One year and two weeks ago. (Well, we can't be sure that that was the "last big meteor" - just the most recent one that was widely observed.)

On February 15, 2013, a meteoroid believed to be about the size of a bus hit the atmosphere and exploded near the town of Chelyabinsk, Russia. The blast broke windows all over town. Nobody was killed, but there were thousands of injuries due mostly to flying glass; people ran to the windows to see what that bright flash was, and were standing near the windows when the shock wave shattered the windows. One teacher, remembering her cold war vintage "duck and cover" training, had her students dive under their desks. None of them were injured when the windows shattered, because the glass mostly landed on the floor and on the desks.

However, the Earth is 3/4 water, and it's quite possible that a bigger one exploded over water, or hit the water, or hit desert areas such as northern Africa or the Outback of Australia. It could easily have gone unnoticed.

The Moon has never crashed into the Earth.

One theory for the Moon's formation hypothesizes that a body approximately the size of Mars hit the Earth while it was forming, and the resulting impact ejected material that condensed into the Moon. If so, this impact probably occurred about 4.5 billion years ago, while the solar system was still in the process of forming.

(The name given to this hypothetical impactor is usually Theia.)

Meteors hit Earth all the time. Most are tiny and make no impact. There are bigger ones, like the Tunguska one in Russia in 1908, or the one that created the crater in Arizona about 50,000 years ago and the one that may have caused the extinction of dinosaurs when it hit near southern Mexico about 65 million years ago.

Several hundred meteorites fall to Earth each year, but only a handful are found. Roughly 70% will fall in the oceans.

When a meteor hits the earth what does it form?

When a meteor hits the Earth it forms a crater.

How might geologists distinguish an impact crater on earth such as Meteor Crater in Arizona from a volcanic feature?

A large meteoric impact such as Meteor Crater in Arizona, displaces the sedimentary rock that has existed before impact. On the rim of Meteor Crater are displaced boulders from lower depositional areas. Small fragments of the meteor are found around the entire area of the impact, and they may be detected with something as simple as a magnet. Features that indicate a volcanic event, like volcanic cinders or quantities of extrusive igneous rock , would also be missing from the impact site.

What effect will a 65ft diameter asteroid have on earth if it does hit the earth?

It will create a crater similar to the Barringer crater (Meteor crater).Where it actually hits will determine the overall destructive effect.Oceans: TsunamiCities: Total destruction.Barren land: Crater.

What kind of feature might be formed on Earth if a large meteorite reached its surface?

A large meteor strike on the earth might cause a crateron the surface. If it struck the water, it may leave a bit of a crater in the sea floor, depending on the size and velocity and composition of the meteor and the depth of the sea where it impacted. If it hit land, there'd be a big "dent" in the ground where the missle and the blast of impact gouged it out.

What is a hole in the ground caused by a meteor hitting a planet?

The impact hole left in the Earth or any planet would be a crater.

Has a meteor ever encountered Earth in the past?

Yes; Meteor Crater (just east of Flagstaff, Arizona) is a fine example thereof. The Chicxulub crater at the Yucatan Peninsula is one of the largest confirmed impact structures on Earth. The impact event has been implicated in the extinction of the dinosaurs.See the Wikipedia link(s) listed below:

Why is the earth's surface not covered with crater?

Weathering and erosion tend to level out crater features, whether impact or volcanic, over time. The atmosphere also protects the surface from many meteor impact events, by burning them up before they strike.

Where is the meteor crater found on earth?

Arizona, USA.The most famous well known Meteor Crater is in northern Arizona in the USA.
