When the Settlers arrived in Canada the Maple Tree was the only source of shelter, fuel, and wood. The Settlers then made a flag depicting the leaves on the tree and the white and red background is for the snow and the sweat and blood that was spilt to make their great country.
Canada started using the maple leaf flag in 1964. In 1965 they adjusted the flag so the maple leaf was wider. The 1965 flag started being used on February 15, 1965. That date is known as National Flag of Canada Day.
