where did the may flower land in 1620
Contrary to popular belief, the Mayflower did not land at Plymouth Rock; it landed in what is now Virginia, possibly at Cape Cod. The Puritans (pilgrims) only established a colony at Plymouth.
The Pilgrims were Separatists that first settled in Holland in 1608 but they thought that their children were becoming too Dutch. They wanted them to stay English and America was the logical place for them to go. They negotiated with the Virginia Company and secured rights to settle under its jurisdiction. But the crowded Mayflower of 102 people after 65 days at sea missed it's destination and arrived off the rocky coast of New England in 1620. They did not make the first landing at Plymouth Rock, but instead did a number of surveys. Finally, they chose Plymouth Bay. It was outside the domain of the Virginia Company so they became squatters and were without legal right to the land or authority to establish a government. Before they left the ship they wrote and signed the 7 line Mayflower Compact and, thus, setting a precedent for later written constitutions. Though, this wasn't a constitution but a simple agreement to form a body politic, and to submit to the will of the majority under the regulations agreed upon. The Compact was signed by 41 adult males. This was the first step to "self government" The winter of 1620-21 was a bad one with only 44 of the 102 surviving. At one time only 7 were well enough to lay the dead in their frosty graves. When the Mayflower sail in the Spring for England not one person left with them. They were a courageous group.
