Like most dogs, Yorkshire Terriers typically go into heat within 6 months to 1 year. But the time period can also vary on their size. It is common for larger Terriers to go into heater sooner then smaller dogs.
Female dogs go through a heat cycle, called estrus, every six months. She will have proestrus, or a bleeding cycle, before her true heat cycle during which she is very receptive to the advances of male dogs. This heat cycle lasts for several days up to three or four weeks. Some female dogs will undergo personality changes during this time, the most common changes being anxiety and irritability.
The only way to prevent a female dog from going into heat and having puppies is to get her fixed. Just remember after her sugary, she will need lots of gentle, patient, care (my yorkie did)!
A Yorkshire terrier are usually in heat for 6 weeks, the 2 week, is the best to breed because she is fertilized. And the discharges have gone through allot already!
3 weeks
Have a spay/neuter performed when she comes out of heat. Vets also sometimes offer amessmate shot, but there can be serious side effects, and its not always effective. (Many vets don't offer them anymore.)
If its female, it has to be in heat. That's if its not fixed. If its male, they'll do it when they want to and if they smell the females hormones. If they're not fixed as well.

All dogs are different. The heat cycle is three stages, coming in, in, and going out. The stages can last 3-7 days each, which means the whole cycle can be 9-21 days. They can get pregnant all through the cycle but are the most fertile and receptive in the middle stage. Our Australian terrier female usually ran the cycle for about 5 or 6 days each stage.
Female American Staffordshire Terriers (Pit Bull Terriers) come into season once every six months and it lasts for 10-14 days.

If both dogs are intact and the female is in heat, yes. The best way to prevent this is to have one or both dogs altered. If not, the dogs MUST be separated for the entire heat cycle (usually three weeks) to avoid breeding.
