Meteors become meteorites when they come in contact with the Earth's surface. Very rarely do meteorites land on Earth because they disintegrate in the Earth's atmosphere due to the extreme friction between the meteor and the atmosphere and because of the high speed the meteor is traveling at.

A meteor is that flaming streak of fire in the sky ... a "shooting star".

A piece of stone and/or metal in orbit around the Sun like those that become meteors is called a "meteoroid."

If anything is left of the meteor and it strikes the ground, it's called a "meteorite."
