changing elements involves changing the number of protons, so you'll be doing some kind of radioactive decay or nuclear fusion/fission; not any ordinary chemical reaction

When the atoms of one element break down to form another atom?

nuclear decay

Why do atoms become elements?

Atoms do not 'become' elements. If it exists as an atom it has always been some type of element from the moment it came into existence. An atom is the smallest piece of an element that is still that element. If you break it down any further you neither have any element or atom, you have subatomic particles.

What is it called when the atoms of one element break down to form atoms of another element?

Nuclear decay. Because the ratio of protons to neutrons deviate from 1:1 as you go down the periodic table, elements of higher mass are unstable, and therefore decay into more stable elements.

As radioactive uranium decay it turns into what stable element?

Heavy radioactive elements (parent nuclei) decay to form daughter products that are as varied in number as the parents. Each heavy element has its own daughter. To find the decay mode and end products of the radioactive decay for a given isotope, use a Table of Nuclides. A link is provided to the interactive chart posted by the National Nuclear Data Center at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The final stable element formed by all radioactive decay is lead (element number 82).

What are chlorine atoms in the stratosphere?

They break down ozone into oxygen atoms.

Will new atoms form when a reactant breaks down in to two or more products?

No. New molecules will form, or a molecule will break down into its component atoms. A chemical reaction never creates or consumes atoms; it only changes how they are bonded to one another.

How does radioactive decay occur?

A chemical element disintegrate forming a new element. Radioactive radiations (alpha, beta, gamma, etc.) are released, also heat. An unstable nucleus breaks down into smaller parts.

Can you break a compound down to a element?

yes

Is a molecule a substance that a chemical reaction can't break down?

A chemical reaction can't break down an element, but it can break down a molecule.

What are atoms called which cannot be chemically broken down?

Elements are substances made of identical atoms which cannot be broken down to other substances. Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.

What is the difference between elements and atoms?

An atom is the smallest piece of an element. Said another way, and element is made up one and only one kind of atoms.

What is the basic unit block of matter that cannot be broken down?

element
