How do you host a baby shower?

By tradition, the woman (or man, you never know these days) that is pregnant has their closest and best friend host the baby shower, or a sister.

Also, at a baby shower I recently attended, they used a wise way of organizing the clothing the baby got. They had a string tied from one end of the room to the other, with a lot of clothes pins attached here and there. When the woman who is having the shower for her opened up clothing for her baby, she hung it on the string. That way everyone can see it, and they are neatly organized.

You tell the pregnant woman that you would like to throw her a shower, and ask her if she'd like one. If she says yes, you decide on a date. Using your budget and space constraints, you determine the number of guests you can host, and ask the honoree for a guest list that fits that number.

Then you plan the party. Reserve the space (if you aren't using your home), line up food and bev, plan games, purchase decorations, party favors, and prizes, and make invitations. You set an appropriate RSVP date and send out the invitations timely. You manage the guest list, finalize the food arrangements, and put up the decorations. On the day of the party, you welcome the guests, ensure that they have refreshments and a seat, manage the games and the flow of the party. When the time comes to open gifts, keep a list of which gifts are given by which guest. When the party ends, you clean up.

• The hostess is the one having the baby shower so she would have to phone all of her friend's friends; her mother and her mother-in-law plus possibly grandmothers or favorite aunts. The hostess should decorate up the chair in which her honored friend will be sitting in or just have streamers and balloons in the room where everyone will be sitting. Chairs should be placed around in a semi circle so everyone can get a view of the guest of honor opening her gifts. Food should be served: fruit platter; vegetable platter; small Sandwiches and finger foods (you can ask some of her friends to help contribute some of the food.) Wine can be served and there should always be coffee and tea available. There should also be a cake ordered with 'Congratulations' to mother and baby. Be sure and either get someone to take pictures of the event so you can give them back to the mother to be and she can put them in her Baby Book. Also when the guest of honor opens her gifts you should have one of her best friends or yourself write down on the baby shower cards who gave what gifts so the guest of honor can send out Thank You cards to those that gave gifts.
