When do you need a visa to travel?

When the country of your destination requires people from your country to obtain a visa at their embassy located near you.
Most of the times, you need to obtain the visa from their embassy prior to arrival but there are some cases that you can obatin your visa upon arrival at destination.

From the United States you require visa for travel if you are not a green card holder or US citizen. Any alien wanting to visit US should have a purpose and visa for that to be able to enter US. For example you require B-2 visa for tourist purposes, require F-1 for student visa etc.

All the countries in the world needs visa to travel! But there are exceptions for some countries like ASEAN Countries (Association of South East Asian Nations) like Singapore, Malaysia,Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Brunei, Timor Islands any citizen from these countries can travel to the other countries which is a member of ASEAN with out a Visa, They will just need a passport and an Immigration stamp in the border or in the airport. Some countries allow US citizens to travel without a visa.. but there are formalities!!
