When do you shift gears when driving?

When first learning to drive you need to listen to the engine. Not many people understand this, but your car communicates to you and tells you when it's running as fast as it can in that gear and needs to change.

Once you are satisfied you're car is ready to change, put your clutch down. (3 pedals: Clutch, brake, accelerator (cba)), shift into the next gear and then pull your clutch up. If you're in an automatic, don't worry about it, it's all done for you.

When driving on public highways and in a safe fashion you change gear when the engine is lower or has exceeded the optimum revolutions per minute. Gears allow the engine to run at its optimum speed when there are varying loads and road conditions
