"Only if it's not been opened."

Improved answer: Everything has an expiration date, even nonedible items. The truth about expiration dates is that they are often more for the sellers than the consumers. Barbecue sauce cannot be SOLD after its expiration date, but it is probably okay to USE long afterward, even if it's been opened. If it's a really old container, however, the contents could discolor (darken), and the ingredients can separate or go bad in the sauce. So I suggest shaking the container vigorously, and then smelling it. If it smells okay, you might take a little taste before using it on or in your food. If it tastes okay, it probably is. If it smells or tastes funny, toss the bottle. And if you're overly concerned about food poisoning, don't risk it - you could make yourself sick just by power of suggestion.
