This asteroid impact threw up billions of tons of dust into the atmosphere and blocked out the sunlight for almost half of a year, dropping the temperatures down to freezing. This killed most of the vegetation and half of the species living on the Earth at the time, including all of the large dinosaurs. This coincided with the fossilized remains showing that fossils of large dinosaurs stopped occurring in the timeline of the rock approximately 65 million years ago.
