Both appeared on a flashback of Jiraiya when he died against Pain i think, the flashback was about how they named naruto, that Minato and Kushina loved the character of Jiraiya's book, and the character's name of that book was "Naruto", so they named their son after that character hoping he becomes just as the character of the book, which does happen! :D
