Female lemurs usually wean their offspring at the beginning of the rainy season, which is when food is most plentiful and their offspring stand the best chance of survival. In some species, either the males or females will stay and live with the rest of the troop while the other gender will disperse to find mates. In other species, the young may live with their parents and siblings for a few years until they mature more and are ready to find a mate.
