The Bible does not tell us the exact moment this happens. It does have verses that indicate that a person goes to either Heaven or Hell at death, such as the following:

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:

(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Philippians 1:21-24 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

Luke 16:22-23 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

AnswerThe following abbreviated passages of Scripture provides compelling evidence that separation of body and soul is not a Christian concept: Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; ……. But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not God of the dead, but of the living" (Matthew Ch 22). Also in John Chapter 5 Jesus said "the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment."

It should also be noted that angels often appeared in human form. They even ate food which Abraham prepared for them. Therefore it is logical to assume that in being like angels those in heaven would be able to appear in bodily substance at will.

So where does the notion of separation of body and soul come from? It would appear from historical records that the physical division of the human person into body, mind, soul, spiriit etc comes more from Greek philosophy than from Christianity.

It depends. It is thought that some advanced practitioners of phowa (the practice of transferring consciousness) may stay in their bodies for three days after brain activity has ceased, tho they may leave anytime before if they so choose. It is also thought that non-practitioners leave immediately.

We do not know this, it is a matter of belief alone. In fact we do not even know that the soul really exists. Michael A. Knibb (The World of Ancient Israel, Life and death in the Old Testament) points out that the early Israelites did not seem to have believed in the soul as being something separate from the body. He says that in Genesis chapter 2 the 'breath of life' is not conceived of as having an existence somehow separate from the body, and it is man as an entity who becomes a 'living being'. Thus, it is widely recognised that there is no suggestion of a dichotomy between body and soul at this point in Hebrew religious belief.

Roman Catholic AnswerNormally there is a presumption, that if a person has just died, as in moments ago, and could possibly be revived, that the soul has not left the body, in other words you could go ahead and anoint the body. There is no clear definition, though. AnswerThe soul leaves a person's body as soon as he dies.

Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

I have personally seen what appear to be ectoplasmic exhalations come from several human bodies out of their mouths, but cannot say if it was a departing soul or not. One was black mist, the others were white. The black mist made the room very cold, and even the morticians assistants declined to go in the room, and pulled the bed to the room door with an rolling IV stand. I have no explanation for this whatsoever .

Your spirit Enters when you are Born & it leaves and wonders off when your asleep and before your about to wake up it returns. Also it leaves your body when you die. Reincarnation occurs.

If you believe in Reincarnation I believe my Answer is Somewhat Correct.

When you die, your soul leaves your body when it is ready to move on. There is no certain timeframe for this to occur. I think it would be different for every person depending on their life and beliefs.

From the scientific point of view, when you are dead your spirit it done - no delay.

From a spiritual point of view, any delay depends on your spiritual and religious views. No one has ever measured such a thing so all opinions are equally valid or invalid - they are only opinions.

There is no specific amount of time. In fact, each major religion speaks differently about what happens when a person dies. Some religions like Hinduism and Buddhism believe in reincarnation, so the soul simply inhabits another body and returns to the material world. Other religions, including some forms of Christianity, believe the spirit departs from the body immediately after death; at that point, the person will be judged by God, who will decide where that person will spend eternity-- either in heaven or in hell. Other traditions are more skeptical, and some do not believe there is a spirit at all-- rather, they believe that when the body dies, the person who inhabited that body is also gone, and lives on only in the memories of those who loved him or her. Since the concept of a spirit or a soul is a belief (and thus, it cannot be proved), it is doubtful you will find any consensus.
