How does the muscles work in the heart?
They work like any other muscles except they contract in a set pattern and in a set way. Each muscle cell can beat on its' own. If you place several muscle cells in a dish, and keep them separate, they will beat on their own. Not together. If you push them together one by one, they will begin to beat in rhythm with one acting as the pacemaker. The entire heart acts somewhat like this. There are two pacemakers. A major one and a minor. If the major one is damaged, the minor one (slower) will take over the job. There is also a conduction system that carries the messages from the pacemakers to all the cells. This system produces contraction that begin in the top two chambers (atria) and then into the lower larger chambers. This you can hear when you listen to the beat. It sounds like this: lubb...dupp.
