Long Tan was basically not against the Viet Cong - the major enemy force was from the North Vietnam regular army. As well as those battalions, there was a VC local battalion - about 400 of the 2,500 enemy force. The hardest time was when the 100 members of D Company 6 RAR were running low on ammunition and hemmed in on three sides. What saved them was the artillery fire from the Australian base, which helped break up the continual attacks. Fortunately the relief force in armoured personnel carriers arrived at dusk, just as an enemy unit was preparing to attack from the rear. The opposition dissolved, having lost about thirty times the casualties inflicted on the Australians.
