Rome is home to the Vatican and the Pope. Thousands of Catholics and non-Catholics alike travel to Rome at Easter time to view the celebration that centers around St. Peter's Basilica.
Holy Thursday - On Holy Thursday, a special mass is held in Saint Peter's Basilica in the morning in which the holy oils are blessed by the Pope. In the evening, the Triduum officially begins with the Mass of the Lord's Supper.
Good Friday - No mass is celebrated on Good Friday as a sign of morning over Christ's death. A service is held in Saint Peter's in the afternoon. On Friday evening, the Pope leads the stations of the cross commemorating the fourteen stages of Christ's passion at the Colosseum.
Saturday - Mass is celebrated in the late evening.
Easter: Mass is celebrated in the morning in Saint Peter's Square. After Mass, the Pope delivers the blessing known as "Urbi et Orbi to the City and to the World" from the balcony on the facade of Saint Peter's.
Foods served at Easter in Rome include carciofi fritti (fried artichokes), capretto o agnellino al forno (roasted goat or baby lamb), carciofi e patate soffritti (sauteèd artichokes with potatoes). Oven roasted lamb, a symbol of the innocent body of Jesus, is often served with baked potatoes or a salad. 'La Colomba' which is more a light, eggy bread shaped in the form of a dove, is served for desert.
Chocolate Easter eggs are filled with tiny toys and other trinkets. They are covered with designs which are true works of art.
