Two good examples would be; When an officer is "hot pursuit" of a fleeing subject who discards evidence and who needs to seize the fruits of the crime that the defendant had on his person - and/or -when necessary to seize evidence to save it from imminent loss or destruction.

Unless they are in "fresh pursuit" of someone (in which case they can only search for the person they were pursuing) - anytime they enter a premises to conduct a search they must have the legal authority of a warrant signed by a judge or judicial officer, with the two following exceptions; they may "enter" a premises without a warrant in "exigent circumstances" (translation: in an emergency), or if they see illegal activity or contraband in "plain view" via casual observation.

During "hot pursuit" of a wanted individual - during the service of an arrest warrant - during 'emergency' situations - if contraband is visible in "plain view." All these situations have their own limiting factors associated with them and are generally not considered open authority to conduct a thorough search of an entire premises.

It is valid to search without a warrant:- if the person who lives at the home gives their consent.

- if the search is incident to arrest.

- when an officer observes a crime in progress or when there is just cause to believe that a crime has taken place. Or when the officers have probable cause, as in they are standing outside a house and see contraband inside.

- if there is reason to believe that evidence will be lost or destroyed before a warrant can be obtained.

- if "exigent" circumstances exist (e.g. imminent danger to public safety).

- In Florida a game warden needs no warrant for any reason and anything he finds is admissible.

A warrant may be necessary for the police to search the server that Facebook is running on. It is also possible that FB may choose to allow the search without a warrant. If the 'search' is simply examining publicly available information on any web page, no. A warrant would not be necessary.
