The Bible has a lot to say about music. The Old Testament is full of such references. In the life of David you see times when instruments were used. There is a book by Herbert Lockyer Jr. about "All the Music of the Bible." You can get it at any large Bible book store or online at www.cbd.com (Christian Book Distributors) I think the book is like thirty dollars or a little more
Music was important to slaves because it offered a bit of happiness in a very dark world. Slaves used music for their religion, for recreation, and to ease the burden of their work. Answer: what an interesting question .
i was reading a National Geographic magazine recently and came across an article about banned forms of Martial Arts in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime. If i remembered correctly, a new form of martial arts emerged during that time which was supposedly the most lethal form of martial arts in the world because of the flying kicks, and someraults which helped in channeling energy.
WHat was interesting was that the people practiced this illegal form of martial arts as a performance full of music and noise. This way, the military did not suspect that the people were actaully practicing self-defence and assumed that they were simply rehearsing for festivals.
Well, originally, it was to help the common people, most of whom couldn't read, to devote themselves to Christianity. Today, they're basically an expression of our faith.

As a teen and our churches music leader, it is very important to me. It shows God that you are there to worship and praise his name! If you are singing the songs just thinking " Oh, I just have to sing because that's what we r supposed to do" is not the right attitude to sing with. If you still have more questions post it!
God Bless.
