End of the summer Aug-Sep is best. The crabs grow throughout the summer and are largest at this time. Do not put them in water because they will suffocate after they use up all of the oxygen from the water. Crabs breathe oxygen via water just like fish do. On the east coast chicken legs, wings or necks work great and they are much cheaper than bacon.
End of spring to the end of summer is the best time because they like the warm weather so they usually come out then.
I like to crab a lot myself!
Crabs like to eat bacon so if you ever go crabbing don't forget the bacon, crabbing lines and a very large bucket filled with salt water.
If you see one of the crabs trying to get out of the bucket or being mean to another crab just put that crab back into the salt water. It will swim away and if you catch him/her again and they do the same thing, then YOU do the same thing you did last time as well! They soon learn.
