In your new area of residence you mean? I never bother until I am already moved in and settled. Checks from the old account work just fine, assuming you are leaving your old account open. Most people who take checks are more than willing to accept that you just moved and have yet to open a new account. They may ask you to cross out the old address and write a new one, or they may ask for your driver's license.

If you order checks without the address on them (you have to ask for this specifically) you can leave the account open and use the checks indefinately without hassle, especially now that most accessing of bank accounts is done online or electronically these days.

More banks take no more than fifteen minutes at best to set up a checking account. Some times it might take longer for it to be an active account since they will have to send you a card and check your information.
