before they wear down to Metal to Metal contact...the time period varies depending on how fast you stop, and how loaded the vehicle is... also, Everyone should have a manual, and the library should have a professional shop manual available for copies in the reference section (FOR FREE)...read up and fix 'em like the pro's...! :) Dave

When you replace your front brake pads should you also replace your rears?

Usually the rear pads or brake shoes depending on whether or not the back brakes are disc or drum brakes will last 2 times longer the the front brakes. 75% of your braking is done by the front brakes. For example, if you have 60,000 miles and your front pads need to be replaced the rear ones will only be about 1/2 worn out.

In 2004 Toyota Camry if I have not used hand brakes do I need to replace front and rear wheels brakes or just front wheel brakes?

Rear brakes do not have to be replaced too often. It's really hard to tell without looking at it. What you can do is to replace front brakes and test drive it, if you feel that your car brakes works just fine you do not need to replace rear brake shoes.

Do you have to replace the back brake shoes if you change front pads?

No. You will only need to replace the brake shoes if they are worn down. Generally the front brakes do 70% of braking leaving the rear with 30%, which will cause the front pads to wear first. What is important however is that you replace either front brakes or rear brakes as a set. i.e. if you're replacing the front brakes do the right and left side.

Do you need to change all brakes for ABS same time?

Not really unless all your brake bads are badly worn down , since abs compensates for the rate of rotation for each wheel so that you brake straight , keeping in mind that the front brakes take the most load and the back brakes take less so you should replace them in sets (front brakes) & (back brakes)
