On hormonal Birth Control you no longer ovulate so you no longer menstruate, instead you get a withdrawal bleed caused by the drop in hormones as a result of going from active to inactive pills. Your withdrawal bleed will only last as long as your placebo pills at most, so that's just one week.
When you first start the pill it is normal to see irregular bleeding so for the first three months you may bleed longer.

The pill helps to regulate your period, and it does a great job! But since the first pills you take when you are bleeding are basically placebos your body wont change until you go through almost a whole pack.
