The Declaration of Independence created internal divisions between those seeking continued Imperial domination and those who believed the differences were irreconcilable and beyond compromise. Those who held allegiance and sympathies to the British crown were known as the loyalists. Although a misnomer for the political party of the same name, American revolutionaries termed them as Tories also.
