Kennedy promised immediatly after the launch of sputnik to have a man on the moon within the decade. Eisenhower created NASA, and the Apollo missions were put into place. On July 16th, 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the moon completing the US goal.
