Volkswagen do not give belt interval changes in the Autodata manuals. To be safe I change all of them being petrol or diesel at 70,000 mile intervals. Hope this helps.

The 2.8 L - V6 engine has a timing CHAIN The 1.8 L and 2.0 L - 4 cylinder engines have a timing belt The 1.9 L - diesel has a timing belt on a 1998 Volkswagen Golf
VW say it should be changed every 60,000mls
no chain or belt driven by cogs
Changing the timing belt on any car is a comlicated procedure and is not recommended if your not sure what you're doing, if done incorrectly you risk destroying the engine, i recommend a garage
Timing marks are located next to the timing belt. They are the marks that indicate the timing belt is no longer aligned to the engine. they indicate whether or not a timing belt needs replaced.
IT don't have a timing belt to change.
