Most mobile phones (and in particular all GSM mobile phones) will allow you to enter telephone numbers in full international format, beginning with a single plus symbol followed by the telephone country code, city code, and subscriber number. Note that telephone country codes never begin with 0; if you see something like 0044 as a telephone country code, that is actually country code +44 with a location-dependent dialing prefix added on.

If you enter a telephone number in international format on your mobile phone, the mobile phone network will automatically substitute any applicable national or international prefix. You will always pay the same rate as if you had dialed the correct prefix yourself.

An important advantage to storing numbers in international format is that you do not have to change the number if you are traveling in a different country. For example, if you stored a number in London with area code 020, or with the European-style prefix 004420, your call will not go through if you are calling from, for example, the United States or Australia. If you enter the same number in international format, beginning with +44 20, your call will go through from any country in which you might be roaming, including the UK, USA, or Australia.
