Alcatraz Island had only one facility on it. It was named Alcatraz Prison. Prior to that is was a fortification.

At that time they did not happen to have the term supermax. But, in its days, Alcatraz was a maximum security prison.

In 1861 it was turned into a prison, but for Civil War Prisoners.
