Oliver Cromwell- 1647-1660 Christmas festivities were banned by Puritan leader Oliver Cromwell, who considered feasting and revelry on what was suppose to be a holy day to be immoral. Anyone caught celebrating was arrested. The ban was only lifted when the Puritans lost power in 1660.

Theodore Roosevelt did not have a Christmas tree in the White House every year. Whether he was against having one or whether he just did not get around to having one put up is a subject for debate. It is verifiable that there was no Christmas tree in the White House in 1902, 1904, and 1922. The lack of a tree in 1902 was due to the fact that President Theodore Roosevelt had not ordered one by December 23. In 1922 First Lady Florence Harding's illness led to a more subdued Christmas celebration at the White House and no Christmas tree.

The so-called Godless Communists in the USSR. It should be noted that Christmas Trees were banned by the ORTHODOX Russians in l9l6 as the Germans were the foe in the War ( true of Russo-German relations in both world wars!) and this was somewhat controversial. the Russian orthodox church was a government agency like the Army, Treasury or Postal service so when the Bishops convened their decision c arried some Atlas-like weight. Christmas trees were banned because of their Germanic origin, it was political.

The Puritans ( which the Mayflower pilgrims were part of) and much, much later and for totally different reasons- The Red Russians. it is claimed they particularily disliked O Holy Night as they got wind of the parody-about You KNOW WHO)- Til SHE appeared and the soul felt it"s worth, the Thrill of Hope, the Fail-Safe point approaches, on one time tape, a New and Glorious Dawn! By the way ( Aurora- goddess of the Dawn) was an alternate code name for- well, She of All the Russias- Anastasia!
