Elijah was a prophet of God who had a message to the children of Israel who where then divided into the Northern and Southern kingdoms. The worshipping of a false god 'Baal' was permeating the land and being pushed by the North upon Jerusalem. The Prophet Elijah confronted this abomination on God's people by a fiery demonstration which purged the priests of Baal and the then Queen Jezebel.
Elijah had to be removed from the land and taken away in a fiery chariot in the heavens (sky) to his birth place for the remainder of his days. This is noted in his letter to the then King some 7 years after the heavenly event (compare 2 Kings 2:11 with 2 Chronicles 21:12). Jesus told us no one but Him was worthy to go to Heaven (see John 3:13).

A common message of 'duality' is often attached to many prophet messages. This means the actual message is for the people of the time or near time of it being spoken but contains a message for the future - usually the 'day of the Lord' or last days. As such, many of Elijah's messages relate to this time.
