Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel(1805-1847) was born in Hamburg, Germany, the eldest of four children. Being born into a prosperous and highly cultured family had its benefits. Fanny's grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn was a leading Jewish philosopher, yet her parents converted to Protestantism when her younger brother, Felix, was a child.

She was raised in Berlin and received her early musical training from her mother. And like her younger brother, she studied theory and composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter, who introduced her to the music of J.S. Bach. From an early age, her musical gifts were evident, and she was strongly encouraged by her family. In fact, her mother, Lea, is believed to have said that Fanny was born with "Bach's fingers."

Her first surviving work is a Lied, written for her father on his birthday when she was only fourteen. And at age fifteen, she enrolled in the Berlin Singaakademie.

Because of the era in which she was born, she was strongly discouraged from pursuing music as a career. And although she had a very close relationship with her younger brother, Felix, he followed the sentiments of the males of that era. He agreed with his father when Fanny was cautioned to focus on "the only calling for a young woman - that of a housewife." Yet, he was supportive of her creative endeavors, and he often asked her advice on musical matters. He didn't help her in becoming published, but he did publish some of her works under his name. When Felix had a private audience with Queen Victoria, she asked him if she could sing her favorite-Italien from his Op. 8 collection. Felix did admit that it wasn't his, but rather his sister's work.

Fanny married the court artist, Wilhelm Hensel in 1829 and had one son, Sebastian. As a wife and mother, Fanny's musical activities focused around the Sunday family salon concerts at the Mendelssohn home. She composed the majority of her music and performed at the piano for these Sunday performances.

In 1838, she made one public appearance as a piano soloist for a benefit performance of one of her brother's works. And the years 1839-1840 were important for her creativity. With her family, she traveled to Italy and wrote Das Jahr (The Year), which is a musical diary for piano of her trip in twelve character pieces.

When her mother died in 1842, she took over the responsibilities of continuing the weekly family concerts.
