Hudson was hired by the Dutch East India Company to find an easterly passage to Asia in 1609 and departed from Amsterdam on April 4. In July, he arrived at Nova Scotia. From there, he sailed to Cape Cod and along the coast. He began his exploration of what is now known as the Hudson River on September 12, 1609.
