The US obtained Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American war in 1898. US also obtained Cuba and Philipeans but only kept Puerto Rico. The Treaty of Paris of 1898 which settled the war between Spain and the U.S. granted the victor all American colonies belonging to Spain. That meant Cuba and Puerto Rico. Since the independence movement in Cuba was championed by the US press, it was impossible politically to justify keeping it as a colony. Thus it was granted independence. Even though many were against Spanish colonial rule in Puerto Rico and the Philippines, this was not widely known in the US so it was possible to keep them. The independence movement in the Philippines was helped by the fact that it was independent right before the signing of the treaty and the resistance to US rule. Also the invasion by Japan during the 2nd World War helped fuel the movement. Puerto Rico was declared an autonomous region of Spain in 1897 but this was revoked before the end of Spanish rule. The fight against Spanish rule culminated with the Grito de Lares, a revolt that was crushed by the Spanish government. As the Puerto Rico economy improved during the 60's, the independence movement was reduced to less than 10% of the population and was actually championed by Puerto Ricans residing in the US.
They did not buy them, they colonized them. Puerto Rico was given to the United States along with Cuba, Phillipines, and Guam by Spain after Spain's defeat in the Spanish-American war. After the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1898 Puerto Rico became a colony of the United States.
