Although Romeo and Juliet was written between 1591-1596, the play could have been set at any time from 1300 to 1600. An argument can be made that it takes place around the late 1400's. Italy was then in a time of unrest, as is showcased in the drama. One of the earlier authors of a version of the story, Luigi da Porto claimed that it took place in the early 14th century. One of his sources set it in the 15th century. When it was performed by Shakespeare's acting company, the costumes would have been contemporary with Shakespeare, that is to say, Elizabethan or 16th century. It is doubtful whether Shakespeare or his contemporaries were much concerned about the period of the play.

Since Shakespeare's day it has been found that the play works even with post-Elizabethan settings, such as those set in the 1920's or the 1990's.

Romeo and Juliet is a really good play and will be passed down for generations to come for its timeless message about true love and the boundaries that come along with a passionate love

Most people say that Romeo and Juliet was during the Renaissance Period.

We don't really know what year it was set in. Shakespeare did not indicate what year he thought the play should be set in. In all likelihood it was set contemporaneously (in the 16th century). Lots of the reenactments of the play are set in different eras.

Shakespeare does not specify when the play is set. It is based on an Italian Folk Tale, so it would be the somewhat vague "olden times" which could be a few years ago or hundreds of years ago.

One of the most successful 20th Century productions of the play had the actors in Elizabethan dress, thus setting it in Shakespeare's day.

The movie High School Musical is loosely based on Romeo and Juliet, and that, of course is set in modern day America.

One reason why all of Shakespeare's plays are so successful 400 years after his death is that they can be set in almost any time period and almost any place.

The play was written in 1595, and does not specify a time setting. Originally it was probably set contemporaneously, and it takes place in Verona, Italy.

No. The events in the play Romeo and Juliet did not happen at all. They are fiction. Nor is the play set in the middle ages. There is no temporal setting to the play.
