Arthur Phillip named Sydney Cove on Port Jackson after the British Home Secretary, Thomas Townshend, the First Viscount Sydney of England, in recognition of Sydney's role in issuing the charter authorising Phillip to establish a penal (prison) colony.

The settlement of Sydney grew at Sydney Cove, becoming known simply as "Sydney".

Sydney was founded in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip who was sent to Australia from England to establish a penal colony. He landed first at botany Bay 8 km to the south but, for several reasons, found it unsuitable for settlement. Phillip continued north to Port Jackson, which he described as 'the finest natural harbour in the world' in a letter to the home secretary, Thomas Townshend Sydney, after whom the city was named. He landed at Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788.

The city of Sydney, now the capital city of New South Wales in Australia, was named after an important person, though not a famous one. It was named by the first Governor of New South Wales, Captain Arthur Phillip, after the British Secretary of State for the Home Office, Lord Sydney. Lord Sydney, or Thomas Townshend - his birth name - was the 1st Viscount Sydney, and a politician who never even visited Australia.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is not named after any person. It was given that name because it crosses Sydney Harbour, which is the body of water upon which the city of Sydney was built.
