Author and poet James Reeves (real name John Morris Reeves) was born on July 1, 1909, in Harrow, England and studied at Cambridge University. One of Reeves earliest works, a collection of his poems, was 'The Natural Need', published in 1936.

He continued writing until his death on May 1, 1978.

The actual date when James Reeves wrote 'The Sea' appears to be unknown. It is a very short poem, and may have been included in one or more of his many books of poems.
