It began in 1945 and ended in 1991. The cold war was not a war in the conventional sense. The communist countries and the free countries were basicly building up weapons stores in an attempt to seem more powerful than the other, and while doing this each side stayed in a constant state of heightened readiness waiting for the other to do something.

The cold war was started right after WW2. It started when the American Government wanted Russia to get rid of its nuclear arms. So each country was racing to produce nuclear missiles. It ended in the Kennedy Administration

When the first nuclear weapons were detonated in August 1945, the cold war began. Atomic weapons created the cold war. Without atomic weapons there would have been NO cold war.
