Believe it or not, there are still some remote American homes without ties to the electrical power grid. It isn't necessarily that some of these people don't want to be tied to the power grid, but some places where people live are so remote that the power grid isn't near where they are. Electric utilities were required to "run lines" all over the place to connect anyone who wanted power when the government began to regulate utilities. Today you can see power lines almost anywhere there is a road (and even where there isn't!). It cost quite a bit to tie some really removed farms and tiny communities to electric power, but as the power grid expanded, eventually pretty much everyone got wired in. There are still some exceptions, though. Even today. There are some places "way out in the boondocks" or "back up in the hollow" where no power lines run.
