The Teflon-based breathable fabric Gore-Tex was patented in 1976 by Wilbert and Robert Gore and Rowena Taylor. In 1980, Robert Gore and others patented a laminate with similar qualities.

Robert Gore first developed expanded PTFE (Teflon) in experiments in 1969, at the company founded by his father (Wilbert Gore) and mother.

Older versions (circa 1070's?) of GoreTex(tm) had bonding problems between the layers and ice and mold build-up was considered a possble problem. Nowadays, this problem is beieved to have been overcome. Note however that mold forming on the surface of GoreTex can damage it.
