When was music invented?
No one is exactly sure when music began, because its composition occurred long before written records or even many languages. Nomadic tribes may have begun using sounds to scare off animals, or in their rituals, or even to accompany songs sung as lullabies to children.
There are musical instruments that still exist from thousands of years ago, including a 40,000-year-old prehistoric flute that was carved from the bone of a bear.
Music was known and recognized in early societies such as China, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. The oldest surviving written music dates to about 1400 BC in ancient Syria.
