When was ovins stone found in ely cathedral?
Ovin's stone was not found in or around the cathedral. It was discovered at a crossroads in a nearby village where it was being used as as a mounting block by the locals. Originally, the stone column which survives was surmounted by a Celtic cross which is lost. Ovin's stone is actually Ovin's Cross. There is no certain connection with the cathedral. However, the inscription has been dated as close to the date of Etherelda's death and her trusted steward was named Ovin. The evidence is inconclusive but the coincidence is intriguing.
