They never did. Instead they signed an armistice in1953. Theoretically they are still at war.

@ er Actually, the south did NOT take part in the signing of the armistice of 1953. It was only the other nations involved the in war including North Korea. So "they" did not sign.. Yes, theoretically the two Koreas are still at war.

I think the two Koreas met separately later (199?) and signed some sort of ceasefire, but I cannot confirm this..

There was never actually peace declared in the Korean War. Americans just gave up, and instead of signing a treaty, at the 38th parallel that divides North and South Korea, guards are in a no fighting zone, where they cannot use violence. The war has never ended, or at least, nobody has won yet.

North Korea never surrendered. They would have surrendured at the next major battle fought, but the U.S. backed out.
