When was surfing invented?

People began surfing in the 1800s in the Polynesian islands, but the first appearance of surfing in the US (California specifically) is credited to Woody Brown who began surfing on plywood in the 1930s.
What country invented surfing?
Many people believe that surfing was invented by Hawaiians, historical documents have disproved this . It was actually invented in Polynesia according to the records of 18th century sailors, some people claim it was invented in ancient South America first, this type of surfing was not the same as what we know as surfing today however and has not been conclusively proven at all, only claimed.

Surfing is a art that was practiced in Hawaii and Polynesia long before there were any written records. Many of their myths have stories about surfing, but it impossible to know how much of it is true and how much is storyteller's invention.
