The liberation of the Philippines is exactly that - the liberation of the Philippines, from the Japanese imperial army, by allied forces in World War 2. The Japanese invaded the Philippines in order to get resources, capture supply routes and to create a Japanese controlled "buffer zone" around mainland Japan. Allied forces, lead by MacArthur eventually retook the Philippines several years later and went on, along with other generals, to destroy the Japanese imperial army and subdue Japan's aggression. Whilst in the Philippines the Japanese army, as with other places inflicted great harm and hostility on the local people and captured soldiers. Bataan is a peninsula in the Philippines. US forces were bottled up there in the Japanese occupation & eventually surrendered.
At the time, the Philippines were a US possession that was scheduled to receive full independence in 1946. Nevertheless, the Philippines were a base for US armed forces and would have to be neutralized once Japan had decided to attack Pearl Harbor. So they had to invade the Philippines to prevent their use by the US as a base for attacking them.
The Japanese successfully invaded the Philippines. Three years later the Allied Forces arrived and defeated the Japanese in the Philippines.
