When was the Blackberry first used?

The first Blackberry was release in 1999 and was based on hardware developed in 1998 by RIM and Ericsson for the Mobitex wirless network pager system.

RIM as a company was founded in 1984 in Ontario, Canada by Mike Lazaridis and has gone from strength to strength now with a yearly revenue of US$3.04 billion (based on fiscal 2006) and now has over 6000 employess (as of Q1 2007).
